Detecting Drones via Network Traffic Analysis

Project Summary

Incidents involving unidentified drones have recently been reported at restricted locations, such as airport runways. In this project, we build an innovative, lightweight, and non-invasive system for detecting drones and identifying their movement. The system leverages analysis of network traffic in a wireless environment and analyzes only the size of the packets exchanged in the network and the mutual interarrival times. Therefore, our system works even if the traffic exchanged between a remote controller and a drone is encrypted, or if the adversary changes the physical (MAC) address of the devices dynamically, or if it blocks the SSID broadcast of the network.
